[ WHAT THIS IS ]

Distance divided by efficiency gives litres; litres times the pump price gives the cost. The per-kilometre figure is the one worth remembering, because it stays the same whatever the trip length and lets you compare journeys.

The field that matters is the efficiency unit. km/L and L/100km are reciprocals and run in opposite directions — the label under the selector always shows your figure the other way round, so a wrong unit is visible rather than silent.

[ QUESTIONS ]

Is my car 12 km/L or 12 L/100km?

Almost certainly km/L, and the difference is enormous. They are reciprocals, not two names for the same scale: 12 km/L is an ordinary car, while 12 L/100km would be a heavy pickup. Enter one where the other is meant and the answer is out by nearly half, but it still looks plausible — which is why the label under the field always tells you what your figure means the other way round.

Where do I find my fuel efficiency?

The most reliable way is to measure it: fill the tank, note the odometer, drive normally, fill up again, and divide the kilometres travelled by the litres it took. Manufacturer figures are measured under test conditions and are usually optimistic, especially in city traffic.

Does this include tolls?

No. It is fuel only. Tolls, parking and the wear a long trip puts on the car are all real costs of driving somewhere, and none of them are counted here.

How should we split it?

The tool divides the total evenly by the number of people. Whether the driver should pay a share, given the car and the wear, is a conversation the calculator cannot have for you.

Why does the cost per kilometre not change on a round trip?

Because twice the distance uses twice the fuel. The total doubles; the rate does not. It is a useful figure precisely because it is stable — it lets you compare this trip against another one of a different length.

[ THE MATHS ]
distance
km per litre
price
per litre
[ THE TWO SCALES ]
20 km/L very efficient
20 L/100km very thirsty

The same number, opposite meanings. To convert, divide into 100: 20 km/L is 5 L/100km. Never multiply.

[ WORKED ]
100 km at 12 km/L, ₱65 a litre
100 ÷ 12 8.33 L
Fuel cost ₱541.67

The cost uses the unrounded consumption, so it is ₱541.67 rather than the ₱541.45 you get from rounding to 8.33 litres first. Over a round trip that rounding would be paid twice.

[ IMPORTANT ]

Fuel only. Tolls, parking and vehicle wear are not counted, and real consumption varies with traffic, load and how you drive. Nothing you type here is sent to our servers — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.
